Part One."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rachel and I had been muttering at each other for some weeks about the upcoming August Bank Holiday at the end of the month. The muttering was along the lines of: \u201c<em>Don\u2019t feel like Carnival this year<\/em>\u201c; \u201c<em>need to get away from London\u201d<\/em>; \u201c<em>can\u2019t face getting on another plane<\/em>\u201c; \u201c<em>sea air, I need sea air<\/em>\u201c; \u201c<em>want to go somewhere to cook and write<\/em>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>And etc etc etc.<\/p>\n<p>And, at the very, very last minute, after discovering that every single suitable dog-friendly and seaside self-catering property\u00a0in England and Wales had been booked for the long weekend, and thinking we might go to a hotel instead (<a href=\"http:\/\/chapelhousepz.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this one in Penzance<\/a> looked wonderful but the availability\u00a0wasn\u2019t quite right), I was offered the use of Penpol, an extraordinary house overlooking Mevagissey harbour on the southern coast of Cornwall, not far from St Austell.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.polpier.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Polpier &amp; Penpol<\/a> is a twin estate perched high up on the hill overlooking Mevagissey. Polpier, the larger house sleeps sixteen, and is also used as a licensed wedding venue. Next door is Penpol, a square white weather-boarded house which sleeps ten, and where we were to stay from Friday through to today (Tuesday).<\/p>\n<p>This is the view from Penpol, down over Mevagissey harbour:<a href=\"http:\/\/everest.wp1.zootemplate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/p4-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1967 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/everest.wp1.zootemplate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/p4-2.jpg\" alt=\"p4\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m always very keen on Cornwall. Not least because of the immediate and continuous access to cream teas. Bring it. (Please note that I am satisfying both Devonians and Cornwall people by doing cream first and cream after the jam here.)<\/p>\n<p>My sister isn\u2019t feeling too well at the moment, so in the end it was just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libertylondongirl.com\/2013\/01\/02\/new-years-eve-in-st-mawes-cornwall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the usual Cornwall crew <\/a>who packed into my father\u2019s ginormous JEEP Grand Cherokee (otherwise known as The Beast) on Thursday afternoon \u2013 Rachel, me, Lettice the miniature Dachshund and Hannah and her husband Mark.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rachel and I had been muttering at each other for some weeks about the upcoming August Bank Holiday at the end of the month.
